Day Old Chicks

Chicks hatch on a weekly to fortnightly basis. Day-old chicks are defined as those up to seven days old. For chicks older than this, pricing may increase to reflect additional feeding and care requirements.

To promote optimal welfare, a minimum order of four chicks is required, as chicks thrive best in social groups. While occasional mortalities can occur, keeping chicks in groups ensures companionship and reduces stress for the survivors.

All chicks are sold unsexed, and due to strict biosecurity protocols, we operate a no-return policy. However, certain breeds—including Welsummers, Cream Legbars, and Partridge Brahmas—can be sexed at hatch. In the rare event of incorrect sexing, a replacement or refund will be provided.

All chicks receive vaccination for Coccidiosis immediately upon hatching. Vaccination for Marek’s Disease is available upon request at an additional cost.

Chicks vaccinated for Coccidiosis do not require medicated starter or grower feeds. Recommended feeds include Lauke Gamebird Starter & Finisher for larger breeds, and Lauke Unmedicated Chick Starter & Pullet Grower for smaller breeds. These feeds have proven effective in supporting healthy development.

Unvaccinated chicks are available; however, these must be collected on the day of hatching. Please contact us for details on upcoming hatch dates and breed availability.

Chicks require a heat source for the first six to eight weeks of life or until fully feathered. As chicks grow rapidly, please ensure you have appropriate housing prepared. Housing should be draft-free, warm, and dry. We recommend avoiding hay or straw bedding, as wet conditions can pose health risks and are also a mite breeding ground. Suitable alternatives include rice hulls, river sand, or wood shavings, with any damp bedding replaced promptly to prevent issues such as moulting.
